The Hub Farm’s First Family Day!
This past Saturday, the Hub Farm experienced an exciting break from the usual weekend quiet: our very first (and definitely not last) Family Day at the Hub Farm!
From 9 am to 12 pm, the Hub Farm was open to the general public to explore and experience our lush natural spaces. The pond, open for catch-and-release fishing, became a hotspot for both beginner and advanced fishers. Families also toured our gardens, met our chatty chickens, and even got to take home free fresh produce grown right here on the farm!
One of the farm’s favorite flamboyant Carolina natives, the maypop, also known as the purple passionflower, couldn’t resist getting in on the Family Day excitement. Popping up in full speckled purple brilliance, visitors admired the maypop, even getting to taste some of its round, green fruit!
The centerpiece of Family Day was our educational microgreen showcase, organized by Asha, our Gillings School of Public Health intern. Deep, eye-catching magenta amaranth, funky clover-lookalike wasabina, and dark purple-stemmed kohlrabi stole the show as we educated families on the fantastic accessibility and nutritional value of microgreens. Microgreens are magically delicious, pack a powerful punch of vitamin and nutrient continent, and are easy and inexpensive to grow at home. Your windowsill or kitchen counter are a perfect host for this fun edible hobby. Families left with new knowledge on microgreen and free packets of seeds of our micro varieties to grow back home.
This was a great beginning for more Family Days to come!
